A 16-pair tournament: at least four matches for everyone
With sixteen pairs the draw works out on its own: four groups of four, and all sixteen go into the round of sixteen with nobody brought back. Thirty-nine matches, and four to seven per pair.
Sixteen is the comfortable number for a padel tournament, and it is no accident: it is a power of two, so the draw needs no gaps and no inventions.
If you are coming from the twelve-pair format, the difference shows immediately: there you needed a preliminary round so that nobody was left out. Here you need nothing.
Four groups of four
Sixteen pairs, four groups of four. Round robin inside each group: six matches per group, twenty-four in all, and every pair plays three.
Three points for a win and zero for a loss. That is where each group table comes from, and the table is all you need to build the draw.
And here is the difference: all sixteen go through
In a twelve-pair tournament, four pairs qualify directly from the group stage and the other eight have to fight through a preliminary round. With sixteen, that disappears.
All sixteen pairs go into the main draw. Round of sixteen, eight matches, and from there the tournament is a normal knockout.
Nobody is out after the group stage and nobody has to be brought back. The draw fills itself.
With sixteen pairs there is no preliminary round and no reprieve: all sixteen go into the round of sixteen. The draw builds itself.
How the round of sixteen is crossed
The crossing is the usual one: first against fourth, second against third. What makes it work is the other rule, the one people forget more often.
Two pairs from the same group are never crossed. If they played each other in the group stage and meet again, it will be later on, not in the round of sixteen.
In practice: the winner of group A against the fourth of group B, the second of C against the third of D, and so on.
The full count
| Stage | What is played | Matches |
|---|---|---|
| Groups | 4 groups of 4, round robin | 24 |
| Round of 16 | All 16 go in, no reprieve | 8 |
| Quarter-finals | 4 | |
| Semi-finals and final | 3 | |
| Total | 39 |
How many matches each pair plays
The minimum is four: the three group matches and the round of sixteen. Same as the twelve-pair tournament, but without needing a preliminary round to make it happen.
The maximum is seven: if you win your group and reach the final. That also matches the twelve-pair format, which is handy if you run both: the court hours per pair are the same.
And if sixteen pairs do not turn up?
Here is the price of such a comfortable number: it only works out if the number is exact.
If fifteen sign up, one slot is left over in the draw. That empty slot is a bye: one pair goes to the quarter-finals without playing the round of sixteen. It is not a mistake, it is the standard way to solve it — but be aware you are giving that pair one match less, and decide in advance who gets it. The usual choice is the best group winner.
It is one format, not the only one. But with sixteen, the draw builds itself.
